Terrific Texas New Year’s Resolutions

Terrific Texas New Year’s Resolutions

With the holidays behind us and the thrill of a new year ahead, we see this month as a blank canvas ready and waiting for us to paint it with experiences. January is also a great time to make changes in your life for the better.

While New Year’s resolutions are often mocked and forgotten, we wholeheartedly support finding a goal to set for yourself if it will make you a healthier, happier person. These achievements don’t have to be extreme– no concrete numbers involved and no strict deadlines. Instead, find a goal you can achieve with simple, easy, and maybe most important of all, pleasurable changes you make in your day-to-day life.

Resolution #1: Glow more.

When you’re tired, stressed, and overworked your skin can really show the effects. Add the signs of wear caused by weather, pollution, and bad diet and you may start to notice your complexion lacks that healthy glow it once had. Banish dullness and put your best face forward by resolving to take better care of your skin from the inside out. First, start prioritizing rest. Nothing dulls your complexion (and your mind) quite like lack of sleep. Second, work in an exercise routine three to four days a week. Sweat helps purify your skin, keeping it looking its best. Plus, the added blood flow and endorphins you get from exercise help you look radiant immediately.

You’ll get that fresh flushed glow that a glass of wine gives you– minus the calories.  Finally, boost your glow from the inside out with a healthy diet. Adding healthy fats like the ones found in avocados and olive oil will make your skin soft and supple while the powerful antioxidants found in foods like extra virgin olive oil will help with anti-aging and protection. If you’re looking for an easy way to add more healthy fats and antioxidants in your diet, try this superfood-packed recipe…

Texas Olive Ranch Glow More Avocado Toast

Breakfast is no long longer toast’s only domain. With the popularity of avocado toast, people have started embracing this simple dish for lunch and dinner as well as the most important meal. These days you can see ritzy restaurants gouging their clientele with $8, $10, even $15 orders of avocado toast. Our version costs only the ingredients and packs an extra wallop of flavor (and antioxidants) with the additions of Texas Olive Ranch Meyer Lemon Olive Oil and pomegranate seeds.

Note: You should be able to find pomegranate seeds sold separately in your produce aisle, so you can skip the pain that is dealing with a fresh pomegranate.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees and toast bread for 3 minutes, each side or use your toaster/toaster oven to prepare the bread as you like. Meanwhile, cut and pit the avocado and place in a small mixing bowl. Mash with fork, adding Texas Olive Ranch Meyer Lemon Olive Oil, salt, and chili flakes to taste. Once avocado is mashed, fold in pomegranate seeds into mixture. Once toast is ready, spread mixture evenly over slices of bread and enjoy.

Resolution #2: Start taking care for tomorrow, today.

It’s a crazy life– but you want as much of it as you can get. This year, resolve to start doing things that will ensure your longevity so you can see more of where this wild ride takes us. If you’ve been holding on to nasty habits like smoking, make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your options for quitting. If you worship the sun day in and day out, start wearing a high SPF sunscreen everytime you’re exposed to its harmful rays. Maybe your vice is more along the lines of a cheeseburger with fries (I feel you there, friend). Well, it may not be Whataburger, but this healthy alternative burger we’ve concocted can help quell your cravings while simultaneously boosting your immune system with antioxidants, regulating your insulin levels, and helps your body work at peak performance in more ways to name here.

Texas Olive Ranch “Figalicious” Balsamic Onion Turkey Burgers

Turkey burgers provide that same meaty, hearty texture you crave while our addition of Texas Olive Ranch Hill Country Herb Garden Olive Oil helps keep them moist and juicy– so you can hardly tell the difference between these and beef. Our “Figalicious” balsamic onion topping may sound fancy, but it’s super easy to make and really elevates the flavors of this burger. Don’t miss out.

For the balsamic onion topping

Use your favorite toppings and whichever bread fit your current diet. We find a good, sturdy whole wheat roll, some cranberry chutney, pickled jalapeños, and a melted slice of provolone do a mighty fine job. This recipe makes 8 patties, so you have enough to experiment with toppings until you find your perfect, healthy burger.

To make the “Figalicious” balsamic onions, grease a large skillet with the Arbequina Extra Virgin Olive Oil and begin to heat on medium low. Add chopped sweet onions and Fig Infused Balsamic Vinegar and cover skillet tightly with a lid. Raise the temperature to about medium high and stir occasionally, replacing the lid to ensure moisture is absorbed by the onions. This should take about 20 minutes. Next, remove lid and stir onions until moisture is completely evaporated. Start pouring in your chosen juice slowly, stirring until it’s evaporated, then adding more. Repeat this process until onions are beautiful, brown, and caramelized.

To make your burgers, preheat your grill or a cast iron skillet to medium high while you prepare the burgers. Mix all ingredients in a large bowl and form 8 uniform patties. Cook over medium high heat, about 6-7 minutes on each side. If you opt in to adding cheese, place a slice atop the burgers and cover the grill or skillet for about 45 seconds so the cheese will  melt. Serve however you desire with about an eighth of the “Figalicious” balsamic onions on top.

Resolution #3: Eat more greens.

We’re not exactly rabbits over here, either, but there’s something to be said about shifting your diet to include more plant-based foods. Besides being healthier, trying more fruits and vegetables helps your expand your palate and broaden your horizons. You can be pleasantly surprised about how much Brussels sprouts have changed since you were a kid. The older you get, the more your tastes change (as evidenced by my now-denial of ever wearing low cut jeans). You owe it to yourself to give vegetables a second try. Adding more greens boosts essential vitamins and minerals into your diet better than any supplement can. Plus, the added fiber helps keep you fuller, longer. The same can be said for the healthy fats found in foods like extra virgin olive oil. So in 2017, green means go.

Well, okay, actually green has always meant go… but you get what I mean. Here’s a recipe that makes it easy to add some greens to your diet, anyways…

Texas Olive Ranch Roasted Garlic Spinach Artichoke Dip with Greek Yogurt

There’s no easier way to eat more greens that a good old fashioned dip. We’re looking at you over there, guacamole…

But one cannot live on guacamole alone. That’s why there is also spinach and artichoke dip! This version uses healthy Greek yogurt instead of mayo while our Texas Olive Ranch Roasted Garlic Infused Olive Oil adds more healthy fats to the party while keep the whole mixture smooth. This recipe is so creamy and delicious, you’ll hardly believe it’s good for you, too. Skip the bread bowl and serve with whole wheat pita or fresh veggies to keep it lean and clean.

  • 8 oz plain full fat Greek yogurt
  • 4 oz low fat sour cream
  • 10 oz frozen spinach, thawed and squeezed
  • 6.5 oz jar artichoke hearts
  • ½ c sliced scallions
  • ¼ c Texas Olive Ranch Roasted Garlic Infused Olive Oil
  • 1 tsp. Dried dill
  • 1 tsp. Onion powder
  • Kosher Salt
  • Fresh Ground Pepper

Remove artichoke hearts from the jar and let them drain on a paper towel. Once drier, but still moist, chop hearts into quarters or smaller to make them bite-sized.

Combine Greek yogurt, sour cream, spinach, artichoke hearts, scallions, Texas Olive Ranch Roasted Garlic Infused Olive Oil, dill, onion powder, and salt and pepper to taste. Stir and break up clumps of spinach and artichoke while evenly distributing seasoning and herbs.

Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to let the flavors party. Serve with warm, crusty bread or crisp vegetable sticks.
